In an update to its weekly wiki, Mozilla announced that its Firefox 3.6 would be released sometime during the first quarter of 2010, while Firefox 4 would ship in late 2010 or “early 2011”. The beta of 4.0, the wiki said, could be expected in the summer of 2010.
A fifth beta for Firefox 3.6 was released as an update to current testers last week, and is also available for download on Mozilla's site. This beta version provides 130 fixes from the last beta issued in November, and reports suggested that even though a release candidate could be expected before the end of the year, the official release would only come in 2010.
Firefox 4.0, according to a recent release of Mozilla's product roadmap, would have a release date sometime in October or November 2010. The new version would have a range of new features including a slick user interface and multi-touch gesture support, according to the draft report. It is also expected to emulate Google Chrome's feature where each tab functions with its own independent process, thereby minimizing the loss of a browser session.
Firefox commands just under 25% of browser market globally, according to Wikipedia's aggregated statistics from various tracking agencies. Its share is said to have dipped marginally with users of non-Windows operating systems trying out the recently released Google Chrome beta for Mac and Linux released earlier this month. |
