Akamai Technologies has said that it acquired all of the assets of Velocitude, a mobile services platform, in a move aimed at boosting its market position in the mobile market.
The acquisition will add mobile content transformation functionality to Akamai's existing suite of cloud services for optimizing Web content and applications, and the delivery of HD video and secure e-commerce to mobile devices, the company statement said.
Akamai quoted research from the Nielsen Norman Group, which predicted mobile Internet usage to surpass desktop usage in the coming five years. The need Akamai plans to fulfil is helping enterprises address the complexity of delivering Web sites and applications to a broader range of Internet-connected devices, starting with mobile phones. It plans to do this by combining Velocitude's mobile content transformation technology with Akamai's ability to optimize the performance of mobile delivery. |
