Akamai Technologies, which powers video, dynamic transactions and enterprise applications online, said it has been selected by Netflix as the primary content delivery network for movies and TV episodes streamed instantly over the Internet.
Akamai offers a service layer to bring content in HD-quality closest to end users with servers less than a 100 miles from all end users, allowing for the fastest, most reliable delivery path from the server to the user. Akamai says this delivery approach improves performance and reliability of HD files, essential for instant download and delivery of movies and an uninterrupted, smooth playback viewing experience.
As of the end of 2009, around half of Netflix's 12.3 million members had instantly watched a movie or TV episode on either a computer or TV via a Netflix ready device. Netflix projects the number to grow in times to come and has therefore decided to partner with Akamai for a global distribution platform for its highly scalable performance and storage capacity to ensure uninterrupted streaming of hundreds of thousands of movies and TV episodes during peak times. Netflix also plans to stream to one country outside the US later this year.
Andrew Rendich, head of Netflix operations said that after changing the way Americans watch movies when his company started mailing DVDs to subscribers in 1999, online streaming over the Internet represents a second revolution in movie watching. "We chose Akamai as our primary content delivery network because we need a strong partner to deliver movies instantly and to be able to meet our ever-increasing demand." |
