Alcatel-Lucent and GlobeNet, a subsidiary of Oi, have announced the completion of an upgrade to the 22,000 kilometer submarine cable system linking the United States with Latin America. GlobeNet is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Oi (formerly Brasil Telecom), headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida. It provides network transport services for carriers and service providers via a fiber-optic cable system connecting North and South America. The network spans over 22,000 kilometers.
The project, the second upgrade in around 18 months, allows GlobeNet to deliver an additional 110 Gbit/s of capacity per fiber pair, which means it could carry almost 13.75 million voice calls at a time. Customers would also benefit from enhanced connectivity, reliability and faster access to applications and services. GlobeNet leveraged Alcatel-Lucent’s submarine technology to expand its wholesale service offering to include broadband, carrier Ethernet, fixed and mobile IP-based and traditional voice services as well as applications such as hosting, video conferencing and international private line services.
In addition to the submarine sections, Alcatel-Lucent upgraded landing points in Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza (Brazil), Maiquetía (Venezuela), St.David’s (Bermuda), Boca Raton and Tuckerton, N.J. At Rio de Janeiro, the submarine network integrates with the terrestrial optical infrastructure of GlobeNet’s parent company, Oi. As part of its project responsibilities, Alcatel-Lucent also managed the installation, deployment and commissioning of the system. |
