Apple, which generated unprecedented hype around its multi-touch iPad release, has now said that it will have to delay the international launch of the product, ironically, because it is a “runaway success in the US thus far.”
In a brief statement today, Apple said that despite delivering over 500,000 iPads within the first week of launch, demand had outstripped its own predictions and will “likely continue to exceed our supply” in weeks to come. Apple said it has also accepted “a large number of pre-orders” for iPad 3G models for delivery by the end of April. On account of this “surprisingly strong US demand” it now has had to postpone the international launch of iPad by a month.
Consequently, the iPad will now launch internationally around the end of May. Apple said it would announce international pricing when it starts accepting online pre-orders on May 10.
Is the iPad already a victim of its own success? Yes, if Apple's own statement is anything to go by. In its statement, Apple said “We know that many international customers waiting to buy an iPad will be disappointed by this news, but we hope they will be pleased to learn the reason—the iPad is a runaway success in the US thus far.” |
