Apple India is under scanner of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) following a complaint that alleges violations of competition related laws. The probe follows a complaint to the regulator that accuses Apple of stifling competition by offering its iPhone 4 through a limited number of service providers and signature stores only.
News reports, however, pointed out that the iPhone 4 needs a micro-SIM, supported presently only by Aircel and Airtel, the two operators offering the device. Other reports said a regular SIM could be easily modified to fit into the micro-SIM slot and that the phone is available unlocked, facilitating use on other 3G networks. Both Aircel and Airtel started marketing the iPhone 4 in May 2011 bundled with 3G data plans that allows discounts to offset the costs of acquiring the device. Reports also said that presently the Commission was still examining the merits of the complaint. Apple India is also yet to respond with statement.
India ranks amongst the world's fastest growing telecommunications markets, with over 800 million mobile phone subscribers. |
