BAE Systems has secured a $45 million multi-year contract to provide Oshkosh Corp. with thermal cameras for 2,399 mine-resistant, ambush-protected all-terrain vehicles (M-ATVs). It is also reported to have a deal for $28 million to make combat helmets for the US Marine Corps.
BAE Systems will provide Oshkosh Corp. thermal cameras for the mine-resistant, ambush-protected all-terrain vehicles, or M-ATVs, that will allow crews to view their surroundings while remaining within the vehicle's protective armor.
Jamie Adair, program manager for BAE Systems in Austin, Texas, said that the ability to see outside the vehicle provides an important increase in situational awareness and safety its occupants, “who frequently travel in very dangerous territory.” He said these thermal cameras would improve safety and mission effectiveness, and “can save lives.” The BAE Systems Check-6 system features infrared camera systems installed inside the vehicles’ taillight housings, and provides visibility in daylight, darkness and adverse weather.
Separately, the Associated Press and Business Week reported that the company had also received a $28 million contract to make lightweight combat helmets for the US Marine Corps. As part of the deal, BAE systems is reported to have been contracted for 120,000 lightweight helmets, with deliveries expected in early 2011. |
