Bill Gates starts Tweeting |

With a first tweet greeting of "Hello World," Gates announced his arrival on the micro blogging scene, with a post that said he was working on his foundation letter, which he plans to publish on 25 January. "'Hello World.' Hard at work on my foundation letter - publishing on 1/25.", his first Tweet read. Incidentally, "Hello World" is also a computer program often used in introductory tutorials for teaching a programming language. It can, arguably, be counted amongst programmer customs, traditions or urban legend where programmers attempting to learn a new programming language script a "Hello World!" program as one of the initial steps of learning a new language. Little wonder that Gate's fifth tweet read, “@aplusk thanks to you and all the other people who have welcomed me. I've got a lot to learn about Twitter but look forward to sharing more.” Gates' Twitter account is stamped with Twitter's "Verified Account" seal, proving that the @BillGates handle is indeed the one-and-only genuine Bill Gates. His web page points to The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Within the first couple of hours itself, he garnered a small army of followers, notching up around 175,000 Twitter followers within the first 17-odd hours, and counting in at 196,000 plus within the first 21 hours of the first tweet. Gates currently follows 40 other Twitter users including news organizations, charity organizations, Microsoft, Vinod Khosla, President Obama, and Queen Rania of Jordan. |
