Microsoft, in a deal with China's biggest search engine Baidu, will now provide search results from its Bing.com search engine for English language searches on the primarily Chinese language search engine.
Baidu dominates the search business in China, providing services mainly in the country's native language. Reports said growing English language searches on the site have prompted the Chinese search engine to look for a partner in order to bridge the language barrier.
World's top search engine Google had exited China, having after shutting down its China site around a year and a half ago while protesting censorship and other issues with the country. News reports said the search results from Bing would start to be features on the Chinese search engine by the end of the year and would most likely be censored. Terms of the deal between Microsoft and Baidu were not disclosed.
Back in 2009, Microsoft had partnered Yahoo! To beef up its search business. According to web analytics firm StatCounter, Bing overtook Yahoo! for the first time worldwide in January 2011 reaching a share of 4.37% in February ahead of Yahoo! at 3.93%. Both search services trail far behind Google's 89.94% of the global search engine market. |
