Virtualization major Citrix has acquired Cloud.com, a provider of software infrastructure platforms for cloud providers. Cloud.com's CloudStack product line helps all kinds of providers deploy and manage simple, cost-effective cloud services that are scalable, secure, and open by design. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, though some news reports pegged the value of the deal between $200 million and $250 million.
This acquisition strengthens Citrix's position in infrastructure for the rapidly growing cloud provider market. In a statement, citing IDC's research, Citrix said the move from the PC to the Cloud will fuel a massive build out in cloud infrastructure, creating a market projected to exceed $11 billion by the end of 2014. These, the company said, wuold not resemble traditional enterprise datacenters and would run on radically different platforms purpose-built for cloud computing that are designed from the ground up to deliver multi-tier, multi-tenant services in the simplest and most cost-effective way.
Unlike traditional enterprise server virtualization platform with cloud management layered on top, Cloud.com's product is a hypervisor-agnostic solution that helps providers build clouds the way the world’s largest and most successful public clouds are built – simple, automated, elastic, scalable and efficient. This approach makes for a quick roll out of new cloud services at a fifth of the cost of alternative solutions, Citrix said.
Having added Cloud.com, Citrix said it now has a complete portfolio of virtualization, orchestration and networking solutions purpose built for the Cloud Era. |
