Corporate training loses out to time and travel costs - Citrix Online Survey

While few companies doubt the ability of training programs to boost productivity morale, benefit customer relationships and hone a competitive edge,  a new survey finds that many training programs under perform for the most mundane reasons: time constraints, lack of employee availability and cost.

The survey, conducted by Kelton Research on behalf of Citrix Online has found that while logistical issues get in the way of training programs, technology costs too prevent programs from happening online.  Elizabeth Cholawsky, vice president of products and client services of Citrix Online says, “when companies try to move training online, they are often discouraged by complicated or costly technology.”

Cushing Anderson, program vice president at IDC said the ability to reach a large, often dispersed workforce, with consistent content and minimal impact on time or travel, will drive the adoption of online training. Making content available to employees in a way that it fits in with the schedule and location is an approach advocated by Anderson, which he said is well addressed by Citrix Online’s approach to training.

According to the survey of small and medium-sized business decision makers,  while a broad understanding of the benefits of employee training abounds, deep challenges come in the way of getting employees together under one roof for a training program. Conflicting work responsibilities (63%) and cost (43%) are the most common explanations for tapering employee participation rates, while a distributed workforce gets in its own way of acquiring the necessary training. In the survey, around 33% of respondents cited business travel and working off site as obstacles to attending a program. Over 40% of respondents with training programs in place, according to the survey, say most of these sessions are conducted entirely in-person, though more than half (54%) of the respondents said an online training program would make a difference, although with easy-to-use technology.
