Dell has said that it will launch its 10-inch Android-based tablet in China this summer, before its home market of the United States.
In a blog post, Amit Midha, Dell's President for China and South Asia, confirmed recent news reports about the company's impending introduction of a 10-inch tablet based on Android. He said Dell is working on a 10-inch Android based tablet for “prosumers” and another Windows 7-based version for enterprise customers that are due out later in the year.
The Android-based version will first make it to the China market later this summer. Midha said this is because “the next one billion people to come onto the Internet will be from emerging countries, with the majority from the so-called BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China). These countries present tremendous growth and opportunity to Dell as a company.”
Dell's first quarter revenues from growth markets, excluding North America, Western Europe and Japan, made up 27 percent of total company revenue. Midha said Dell's revenues in China grew 22 percent during the first quarter, where it is presently ranked second in the PC market and is seeing increasing business from the small and medium-business users segment. He said offering the Android 10” tablet in the US and European markets later would allow developers time to create robust apps, particularly for mobile professionals, and companies developing services and solutions to optimize their product for Android. Besides, he added, China's access to Google applications and the Android Market is not available today in many cases, because of which the end product comprising hardware, software, and availability of applications, services and solutions “will be significantly different to what would be delivered in many other countries.” “We will use what we learn in China to shape mobile products we’ll offer in other places down the road,” Midha said. |
