Google has signed a 20-year long power purchase agreement (PPA) with NextEra Energy Resources Story Country II facility in Iowa, as its latest step to voluntarily become carbon neutral.
Starting July 30, Google will commence purchasing clean energy from 114 megawatts of wind generation at the NextEra Energy Resources Story County II facility in Iowa, at a predetermined rate, for 20 years. The company said that incorporating “such a large amount of wind power into our portfolio is tricky,” and said that power from this source would is enough to supply several data centers.
Google's senior vice president for operations, Urs Hoelzle, said in the blog that as outlined in 2007, Google aims to voluntarily become carbon neutral, taking responsibility for its carbon emissions and help promote sustainable environmental solutions. Google's three pronged approach to go green includes minimizing energy consumption, powering its facilities with renewable energy, and purchasing carbon offsets for the emissions it cannot directly eliminate. Today's deal falls in the second step of the process.
Google said that this two-decade long contract would provide the developer of the wind farm financial certainty to build additional clean energy projects, explaining that the inability of renewable energy developers to obtain financing is a significant inhibitor to the expansion of renewable energy.
“We’ve been excited about this deal because taking 114 megawatts of wind power off the market for so long means producers have the incentive and means to build more renewable energy capacity for other customers,” Hoelzle said in the blog post. |
