Google hosted around 400 chief information officers and IT professionals at its “Atmosphere” event at the Googleplex dedicated to cloud computing, where it also announced the launch of the next generation Google Docs platform for cloud based collaboration and faster, richer functionality.
Google said its discussion was centered around how companies can focus their tech expertise on projects that improve their businesses rather than devote resources towards managing complex applications, technology platforms and devices. It shared information on improvements to Google Docs that were made possible by a new codebase that Google said would allow it to deliver richer functionality more quickly.
New document and spreadsheet features Google said it added a margin ruler in documents, better numbering and bullets and easier image placement options. In spreadsheets, there's a formula editing bar, cell auto-complete, drag-and-drop columns and other features that are not possible with older browser technologies.
Higher fidelity document import Improvements to Google's document upload feature, other than ease of upload, will now also ensure that the imported documents retain their original structure more accurately, which will help users save time and effort previously invested to fix issues in formatting such as bullets and text alignment.
Speed and responsiveness Speed, Google said, was one of the improvements given new browser technologies like faster JavaScript processing have made it possible to speed up Google Docs significantly. It said that in the new Google Docs, even very large spreadsheets would be fast to work with, and applications would mimic the feel of desktop applications given their speed of performance, even as they have the unique advantages of being in the cloud.
Faster collaboration Google Docs’ extended collaboration capabilities will now support up to 50 people working together at once, and in documents, Google says users will be able to now see other people’s edits as they happen character-by-character. Google also introduced a new editor for drawings that will allow for collaboration on flow charts, diagrams and other schematics in real time.
Reports in the media indicated the upgrades to Google Docs logically follows Google's acquisition of DocVerse, a company that allowed online collaboration for documents created in rival Microsoft's Office suite, and winning over users at the bottom of the pyramid – the individual and small business segment. |
