The Software Top 100 was first created in 2001 by Balder Verberne when he needed a list of the largest software companies in the world for his
Master thesis in Business Administration at the Erasmus University. He could not find a list that was freely available and met scientific
quality standards, so he developed a rudimentary list himself. Since then a small team of enthusiasts extends and improves the list each year.
To ensure the Top 100 is published every year according to the stated objective methodology a foundation now oversees the publication process:
the Top 100 Research Foundation.
