IBM has said that it has teamed with Hughes Telematics, Inc. (HTI) and Daimler Fleetboard GmbH to address the growing complexity of designing and managing automotive systems. The terms of the collaboration were not disclosed.
Daimler Fleetboard and HTI, together with IBM, will develop software platforms that more quickly deliver telematics services to their customers.
HTI's website speaks of the technology as intuitive, easy-to-use services, such as “locating a coffee shop in Chicago, an ambulance in the middle of nowhere or the latest e-mail in your inbox.” The technology has other applications as well in areas such as emergency warning systems, intelligent vehicle technologies, locking or unlocking doors through a smart phone, vehicle tracking, fleet management, cold storage freight logistics, locating stolen vehicles, and satellite navigation, amongst others.
IBM quoted research firm ABI in its statement announcing the collaboration, saying that telematics – the confluence of information and telecommunications technology – is expected to be standard in vehicles by 2015. Telematics would allow vehicles to be connected in ways that enhance the driving experience for consumers, or increase operational effectiveness of transportation companies.
