A study by CA Technologies has revealed that 79 percent of IT organizations believe mainframe to be an essential component of their cloud computing strategy.
Titled "Mainframe - The Ultimate Cloud Platform?", the survey found 74 percent of respondents to believe that mainframes will have a role in any cloud computing initiative while 70 percent agreed that cloud computing will sustain or extend the mainframe environment. Eighty two percent of respondents said they intend to use the mainframe in the future either as much or more than today.
Dayton Semerjian, general manager, Mainframe, CA Technologies said the survey is evidence of the mainframe's agility to perform in new IT models such as cloud computing, and its on-going durability as a critical data center platform for decades to come. "Ongoing, practical innovation will be required to ensure that the mainframe can always be an effective and integral part of an evolving IT infrastructure," he said. However, manpower challenges remain, for which CA Technologies is piloting a Mainframe Academy in Europe as part of a global initiative to help a new generation of employees become effective on the mainframe.
The once dominant computing environment seems to have skipped a generation during the era of dominance of the PC, but seems on track to script its come-back story as the paradigms once again shift in the computing world. |
