According to StatCounter, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) browser dropped below 50% share of the worldwide market for the first time. StatCounter Global Stats has found that IE dropped to 49.87% in September, followed by Firefox with a 31.5% share of the browser market. Google’s Chrome is posting strong gains in market share, having more than tripled its share from 3.69% in September 2009 to 11.54% in September 2010. “This is certainly a milestone in the Internet browser wars,” commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter. “Just two years ago IE dominated the worldwide market with 67%.” He said Microsoft’s agreement with the European Commission competition authorities to offer EU users a choice and menu of browsers from March of this year may have tipped IE below 50% globally. In December last year, Microsoft and EU regulators ended an antitrust case after Microsoft agreed to allow Europeans customers of Windows to voluntarily choose from a menu of Web browsers that compete with its own Internet Explorer. By March 2010, StatCounter's data revealed IE to have lost three times its usual market share loss rate across some European markets since this 'browser ballot' mechanism came to be. In Europe, IE's market share dropped to 40.26% in September 2010 from 46.44% in September 2009. In North America, however, IE is still above 50% at 52.3% followed by Firefox at 27.21% and Chrome at 9.87%, even as the rise of Google Chrome in that market has been stellar. In June, Google Chrome overtook Safari for the first time. |
