Microsoft has entered into an agreement with smart phone manufacturer HTC that will also cover HTC's Android phones, and will see the software giant receive royalties.
Microsoft Corp. and HTC Corp. signed a patent agreement that provides broad coverage under Microsoft's patent portfolio for HTC's mobile phones running the Android mobile platform. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will receive royalties from HTC.
Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and deputy general counsel of Intellectual Property and Licensing at Microsoft said, "HTC and Microsoft have a long history of technical and commercial collaboration, and today's agreement is an example of how industry leaders can reach commercial arrangements that address intellectual property."
HTC has been recently sued by Apple for infringing on 20 plus patents. Reports in the media suggested that HTC's agreement on patents with Microsoft could have implications or even bolster HTC's stand in any courtroom engagement with Apple.
