Nintendo (任天堂株式会社) is a multinational corporation located in Kyoto, Japan. Founded on September 23, 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi, it produced handmade hanafuda cards. Later on, since 1975, Nintendo developed into a video game company, producing consoles and games. The release of Donkey Kong in 1981 gave Nintendo a huge boost. Another great succes came with the release of Super Mario Bros. With the release of various (handheld) consoles and games, Nintendo maintained an industry leading position. The most recent console, the Wii, opened gaming to a whole new audience, which made Nintendo one of the fastest growing software companies of the Software Top 100. In 2009, Nintendo was the largest video game company in the world.
