Opera Mini for iPhone was today officially submitted to the Apple iPhone App store, after a select few were witness to it at Mobile World Congress 2010 in February. Opera has since followed through in creating a version for the iPhone App store, and says that this is the first step for the “fast like a rocket” browser towards “giving users a new way to browse on the iPhone.”
In its statement, Opera said that early reviews of Opera Mini for iPhone praised its browsing speed, claiming that it powered through web pages up to six times faster than Apple's Safari. The Opera Mini compresses data by up to 90 percent before sending it to the phone due to server-side rendering, resulting in quicker page loading and more web per MB for the end user. Opera said that those familiar with iPhone roaming charges will relish Opera Mini’s ability to “deliver more for less, giving users the Web they want quickly, without, the high costs.”
“The Opera Mini for iPhone sneak peek during MWC told us that we have something special,” said Jon von Tetzchner, Co-founder, Opera Software. He said Opera has invested effort into creating a customized, stylized, feature-rich and highly-responsive browser that “masterfully combines iPhone capabilities with Opera’s renowned web experience, and the result is a high performing browser for the iPhone.”
Opera's optimism about Apple approving the Opera Mini for the iPhone, according to some media reports, hinges on the improved speed of browsing as compared to Safari and its already 50 million-strong user base. Other reports quoted unnamed analysts as opining that Apple, which guards its turf very closely, may consider not-approving the Opera Mini in order to stay on top of the Internet browsing functionality on the iPhone. The iPhone App Store is the primary way for iPhone users to access and install software on their iconic device.
Opera said its Opera Mini is the world’s most popular mobile Web browser that brought the web to almost any mobile phone, with speed, usability and navigation-friendly design ensuring its adoption in over 50 million mobile phones worldwide. “Creating a version for iPhone is part of Opera’s mission to bring the Web to all platforms and all devices,” Opera said. |
