In an interview at Churchill club, Larry Ellison said SUN is losing US$ 100 mln per month while EU approval of the acquisition is pending. This situation could take until January 19, the deadline the EU has given itself to conclude its in-depth investigation of the acquisition.
The EU’s competition office states it is concerned about competition on the database market, as Oracle will increase in strength when the extremely popular MySQL database – acquired by SUN last year - is added to Oracle’s portfolio. With 11 million active installations MySQL is the most widely used open source database in the world today. As Oracle DB is the world’s most popular database in terms of sales revenues, the EUs attention for the issue is evident.
Ellison says Oracle DB and MySQL operate in different market segments, and he is unwilling to cater to EU concerns by keeping MySQL out of the SUN deal.
Ellison also explained his vision for the Oracle-SUN combination: “I would like us to be the successor to IBM.” Given combined sales of about US$ 36 billion in 2008, Ellison still has some work to do before he tops IBMs revenues, which were over US$ 100 billion, and rising. |
