Rumours of Windows 8 |

Last week, we covered Dell trying to woo non-windows operating systems for its line of computers, to which we asked what was in store for Windows for the future. Turns out, Windows 8 could be dictating terms and then some to OEMs. With a little bit of leaked insight into the in-the-works or yet-to-be-developed Windows 8, it is clear that Microsoft is definitely talking to computer makers about what their hardware should support in software and user features that future machines should be capable of. ![]() On his Microsoft Journal Web site, Francisco Martin Garcia, a Windows enthusiast, put into the public domain numerous slides of what looked like a "Microsoft Confidential" presentation that talked about some key features of a in-the-works, secret operating system. The leaked deck, which is said to be dated April 2010, talked about features like displays that adapt to ambient light for maximum visibility, unparalleled super fast boot-up times, and using facial recognition for logins. USB 3.0 and Bluetooth 3.0 were also mentioned. No surprise that the link to that blog now returns an “unavailable” message, even though most of that information, along with some commentary is available on another website called Microsoft Kitchen. Given that what hits the market from Microsoft's stables can be drastically different, or evolved, from the company's plans (case in point, Longhorn as announced and the eventual Windows Vista), a pinch of salt is well advised. That said, the idea of Windows 8 in light of whatever was leaked, is definitely interesting. More interesting, of course, is the idea of hardware manufacturers being dictated to by a software company. Image: Windows 7 Pond Touch Screen, courtesy Microsoft |
