Lee Kun-hee, Chairman of Samsung Electronics is reported to have asked his company's top manageent for available options, including acquisitions, to strengthen the company's software prowess, according to media reports.
The move is said to be driven by Google's recent acquisition of Motorola Mobility. News agency Reuters quoted Kim Soon-taek, head of the Samsung Group office, telling local reporters that Chairman Lee asked managers to evaluate plans, including possible merger and acquisition options, to enhance the firm's software competitiveness. Samsung is second only to Apple in the smart phone segment, and is the largest vendor for Google's Android smart phone operating system. A report in the Korea JoongAng Daily quoted Kun-hee as saying that IT power was moving away from hardware companies to software companies.
Apple-focused website Apple Insider quoted a news report by South Korean news organization The Dong-a Ilbo that talked about the Samsung Chairman asking executives to beef up the Samsung's Bada smart phone platform, which had sold better than the Windows Phone 7 platform earlier. Samsung had earlier welcomes Google’s acquisition of Motorola Mobility, saying that it would provide intellectual property protection for the Android ecosystem, without any impact foreseen to its mobile business. |
