Research firm Gartner has said that while global phone sales to end users clocked 417 million units in the third quarter of 2010, marking a 35 percent increase from the third quarter of 2009, smartphone sales grew 96 percent in the same period, accounting for 19.3 percent of overall mobile phone sales in the third quarter of 2010.
Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner said the quarter saw Apple and Android drive record smartphone sales, with Apple's share surpassing Blackberry manufacturer Research In Motion's share of the North American market, placing it second behind Android. “Android volumes also grew rapidly making it the No. 2 operating system worldwide.”
Gartner said Q3 2010 clocked record sales of more than 81 million communication devices based on open operating systems (smartphones). Android captured 25.5 percent of the worldwide smartphone sales, securing the No. 2 operating system (OS) slot as it extended its dominance over North America, where Gartner estimates the OS to have accounted for 75 percent to 80 percent of Verizon Wireless's smartphone trade during the quarter.
Apple performed extremely well thanks to the iPhone 4, the firm said, its relationships with multiple CSPs giving it a wider channel reach internationally as the strong ecosystem around iTunes and the App Store boosting its dominant position. Apple's share of the smartphone market surpassed RIM in North America during the quarter, according to Gartner, placing it second behind Android.
For 2010, Gartner anticipates overall devices sales to notch 30 percent year-on-year growth fueled by white-box manufacturers. It said the impact of media tablets on mobile device sales will be tested in 2011, even as it forecast media tablets such as Apple's iPad to reach 54.8 million units in 2011. |
