The latest version of Canonical's popular Linux-based operating system, Ubuntu 10.10 or the 'Maverick Meerkat', is being marketed as the “Perfect 10”.
Ubuntu 10.10 focuses on home and mobile computing users through its desktop and netbook versions, bringing an array of online and offline applications with a particular focus on the personal cloud. Canonical CEO Jane Silber dubbed the Perfect 10 as the company's “most consumer-friendly release yet,” adding that Ubuntu One’s personal cloud services will endear Ubuntu to “the heart of many users’ computing worlds even when they need or prefer to use other platforms.”
Netbook The Netbook edition introduces users to a new experience and an all-new desktop interface called ‘Unity’ that is optimized for smaller screens and computing on the move, maximizing precious screen space on mobile devices. It also supports touch and gestures, aimed at the increasing number of devices with multi-touch support, with its larger icons and a more touch-intuitive interface.
Desktop The Desktop edition includes user interface improvements including visual appeal and a Software Centre that has a cleaner, more intuitive design along with the ability to purchase commercial applications. As a centralized place to keep track of all things software, it also keeps a tab on installed, removed and updates to software. The installer too has received an upgrade and can download updates during the install process, saving the user's precious time and potentially negating the need for a post-installation update.
The Cloud Ubuntu One, the personal cloud service for Ubuntu users, hosts new services and expanded features in 10.10, with performance enhancements and interoperability with other operating systems including Google’s Android, Apple’s iPhone and Microsoft Windows. Ubuntu One Basic, with 2GB of storage space, comes free of charge, while users who need more space can subscribe to additional 20GB blocks on demand, presently priced at $2.99 per month or $29.99 per annum for each 20GB package.
Server The Server edition of 10.10 makes it easier to configure, update and run both in development and deployment environments of public clouds. It features kernel upgrades, more configuration options at boot time, and the ability to run the AMI (Amazon Machine Image) off-line on a KVM-virtualised machine, which means users can test and develop on local servers before pushing to the public cloud – in true hybrid cloud computing style. Canonical is allow allowing a free one hour trail for anyone who would like to test drive the Server Edition on Amazon EC2. |
