Ubuntu, the free Linux-for-humans operating system from Canonical, has announced the availability of the beta version of its 10.04 Lucid Lynx, the next version that comes with long term support (LTS). Fast, feature packed, and with built in social networking support, the beta has already become a favorite topic with tech-bloggers, and promises to give a solid viable alternative to Microsoft in the desktop operating system space.
Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx is faster than its predecessor versions, with some tests claiming installation times of under 10 minutes, and boot-up times of under 15 seconds on Intel's Core2Duo machines. The Ubuntu community is working towards an 'instant-on' 10-second boot up time by the official launch of this version on April 29th, 2010. Reports remained skeptcial about Ubuntu being able to achieve that goal by the official launch of this version, but nevertheless, were all praise for the supersonic start up times the beta version delivers.
Amongst other changes, Ubuntu has moved from its conventional 'human' brown appearance to two new themes, Ambiance and Radiance. A new, updated logo adds to the look and feel. In the new version, the default search engine for the pre-installed Mozilla Firefox has been changed to Yahoo!, though this can be modified according to user settings. The nouveau video driver is now the default for nVidia hardware in 10.04, which provides kernel mode setting, that provides improved resolution detection and will provide hardware accelerated 2D functionality.
Most notably, Lucid Lynx integrates social networking features into the operating system, with the Gwibber project and MeMenu panel. These features will provide built-in integration with Twitter, identi.ca, Facebook, and other social networks with MeMenu in the panel, which is built upon the Gwibber project. Gwibber now also supports a multi-column view for monitoring multiple feeds simultaneously. The notification area also features more consistent user experience and design for communication, session management and other tasks.
Giving Apple's music store some competition, Ubuntu has announced the Ubuntu One music store integrated into the Rhythmbox music player in 10.04 Lucid Lynx. Though this, users can buy and download music and albums from 7digital, an online music distribution service that boasts over four million songs in the MP3 format without digital rights management. Ubuntu One also provides 2 GB of hosted cloud based storage for free, and more for a small fee.
A second beta version of Ubuntu 10.04 is said to be scheduled for availability around April 8, with the final launch slated for April 29th, 2010. |
