Tech innovation and licensing company Wi-LAN Inc. has said that it has initiated legal proceedings against a host of well-known large corporations for infringment of its patent for making and/or selling various products with Bluetooth technology, including cellular phone handsets and notebook computers.
Founded in 1992, Canadian company WiLAN has licensed its intellectual property to over 220 companies worldwide, most of whom manufacture or sell a wide range of communication and consumer electronics products including 3G cellular handsets, Wi-Fi-enabled laptops, Wi-Fi/DSL routers, xDSL infrastructure equipment, WiMAX base stations and digital television receivers.
Wi-LAN said it has initiated litigation in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division against Acer, Inc., Acer America Corporation, Apple, Inc., Atheros Communications, Inc., Belkin International, Inc., Broadcom Corporation, Dell, Inc., D-Link Corporation, D-Link Systems, Inc., Gateway, Inc., Hewlett-Packard Company, Intel Corporation, Lenovo Group Ltd., Lenovo (United States) Inc., LG Electronics Mobilecomm U.S.A., Inc., LG Electronics, Inc., Marvell Semiconductor, Inc., Motorola, Inc., Personal Communications Devices, LLC, Sony Corporation, Sony Corporation of America, Sony Electronics, Inc., Sony Computer Entertainment America, Inc., Texas Instruments, Incorporated, Toshiba America, Inc., Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Toshiba Corporation, and UTStarcom, Inc. In its filing, WiLAN claims that these companies have infringed and continue to infringe WiLAN's US Patent No. 5,515,369 by making and/or selling various products enabled with Bluetooth technology including cellular handsets and personal notebook computers . WiLAN said it has a large and growing portfolio of over 800 issued or pending patents. Reports said WiLAN is seeking unspecified damages and an order to halt practically all these corporations from using Bluetooth technology. Over recent years, Bluetooth has become commonplace in mobile phones, hands-free headsets and portable computers to wirelessly transmit data and voice. |
